Laing Companies
Partners in creating communities.
Laing Companies specializes in building and preserving affordable housing by partnering with other developers, public agencies, and community groups. In addition to housing development, it provides development consulting services encompassing the full life-cycle of a project as well as advisory, strategic planning, and capacity building services at the organizational level to developers, public agencies, and community groups.
Mission
To develop and acquire multifamily and mixed-use projects that include an affordable housing component, providing access to quality housing and services for existing residents in a community.
Vision
To be a leader in affordable housing development, acquisition, and mixed-use development.
Delivering the projects others find too complex to move.
Alexis Laing is the President and CEO of Laing Companies. She founded the firm in 2022 after nearly 20 years representing respected affordable housing developers and financiers on complex and high-profile projects. In total, she has overseen the development of more than 2,000 units of affordable housing throughout California.
At Laing Companies, she partners with public agencies and fellow developers to deliver the projects others find too challenging, layering multiple funding sources into deals that get built. She pairs disciplined underwriting, consultation, and project management with a deep, personal commitment to the communities she serves. She is currently developing two projects on state excess land – a senior project in Covina and a family project in Fresno.
Prior to founding the firm, Alexis focused on new development opportunities in the Los Angeles metropolitan and Southern California for BRIDGE Housing Corporation and Thomas Safran & Associates. Representative projects include the Villages at Westview, a RAD redevelopment in Ventura, which is replacing 180 distressed public housing units with 320 new affordable housing units over four phases (286 multifamily apartments and 34 for-sale homes). In Los Angeles, she oversaw the Vermont Manchester Transit Priority Project Site (Evermont), a mixed-use, transit-oriented development that includes 180 affordable and permanent supportive housing units (Luminus@Evermont - a 118-unit family community and Vista@Evermont - a 62-unit permanent supportive housing community for older adults), over 50,000 square feet of grocery-anchored retail, a Metro training center, a central outdoor plaza, and parking to support the mixed uses.
Earlier, as a municipal credit analyst for Standard & Poor’s, she provided financial and legal analysis of affordable housing and other tax-exempt bond issues, and served as the primary credit analyst for more than 10 state housing finance agencies and public housing authorities. Alexis’ prior work experience also includes working for Skid Row Housing Trust, where she managed the development of permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals, and development internships with Jonathan Rose Companies (New York, NY) and Harvard University (Cambridge, MA).
Alexis holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Policy, Management, Planning, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from University of Southern California, a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University, and a Master of Business Administration from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
